 “A person’s wedding day is one of the most special events in their lives. Making it go off without a hitch and making it memorable is something Lynn Fletcher has been focusing on for many years.

“The key for me is to have a well-oiled system. A check and balance system for the day. Really having every detail ironed out prior to the day. The day of the wedding should be fun. It should be celebratory. It should be happy. And for us logistically, it should be autopilot so we handle any unforeseen things … on the day. We’re able to do that because everything else is going as planned,” says the owner of Lynn Fletcher Weddings Inc. “It’s really important (for the bride) to be able to just let go and be really present with her husband that day and really enjoy every second and not worry about the logistical stuff that she’s given me to do. Super important.”

Fletcher is a wedding producer, planning and designing high-end weddings all over Calgary and southern Alberta. Many of them take place in mountain settings. The Banff Springs Hotel is an obvious popular choice for a location.

She says a key to her business is a decor focus and exceptional customer service.

When she was a teacher’s aide years ago, she spent much of her time planning events for the school, running clubs and making costumes for the drama department. She handled graduation and retirement parties. At one time, she was also making bridal gowns from scratch for plus-size brides. During her career, she has handled wedding planning for events ranging from $10,000 to $3 million.

“Our tag line forever has been ‘it can’t be wrong if it’s sparkly’…so we have a lot of bling!” says Fletcher.

The LFW Booth this year had a colour palette of turquoise blue, eggplant and violet purple, with touches of chartreuse and silver! The entire ceiling was dripping in crystal beaded curtains, with the Fuze Entertainment screens behind, playing wedding slide shows and live bands. The table itself had purple coloured lights inside two clear lucite boxes, underneath a glass topper. The look was completed with black Ghost Chairs, Beaded and Ruffled Pillows, and Peacock Feather inspired table Settings and Floral Displays! We were also thrilled to take part in designing the front entrance area of the Calgary Wedding Fair Exhibition this year! The entrance included a 40 foot painted canvas mural or an Italian garden, 40 foot long family style table finished with champagne and vintage gold rosette and satin linens, lace inspired menu stationary, and clear Ghost Chairs with the Wedding Fair Logo adhered to the back. Above the seating were five intricate glass and metallic chandeliers in various shades.

Today we are thrilled to profile Aydin Productions Ltd., who has created some of our most memorable videos from wedding days.

Please tell us a little bit more about you and your work!

I was born in Istanbul, Turkey and was two when we immigrated to Montreal, Canada. The love of the mountains and sports such as mountain biking and snowboarding brought me to Banff 20 years ago. At first I worked in  the hospitality industry and I made the move to creating video and films in 2002.

When did you make your first video?

My first video was back in 1998 when I made a short film and entered a film contest.  My film was a finalist and so I decided I might have some talent I should pursue.

How did you get started as an event videographer? Was it a hobby that you took further? A family business?

I helped a friend film a wedding and edit it and from then on I never looked back. I continued shooting incentive programs and events for other production companies and in 2002 I left my position as a Concierge, managing a team of 25 staff, to start Aydin Productions Ltd.

Tell us about your services. How does a couple go about booking you for their wedding or event?

I like to discuss possibilities with clients and couples first,  and go from there. There is no one formula or one price for everyone, so it’s nice to explore different avenues so we can produce a great event or wedding film.  It’s best if people start at my website, get a few ideas, and then call to tell me what they liked about what they saw and what other ideas they may have.  Once we know what we want to accomplish, the remainder is administration of contracts, payments etc.

Please briefly explain the process of the making of the videos. What is it that you like most about it?

I first need to understand the scope of the project; are we trying to capture the ambiance of a specific moment or event,  or is it about telling the story of a relationship that culminates in a beautiful celebration?   You can capture a moment in photos , and video captures sounds and motion, creating a more complete memory of an occasion.

What are some of the favorite pieces that you have done so far?

Everyone of my films and videos mean something to me, but I think Michelle’s birthday event at Silvertip, created by LFW ,was my favourite because it had so much meaning and emotion. I was proud to be a part of it. The video also won an award for LFW.  Min & Justin’s wedding was also right up there with another LFW design that won an award this year.

Do you have any filmmakers that you like a lot, that you see as influences in some of your work?

I watch many filmmakers for a variety of reasons and find they all add something to my creations. I try to capture my own vision of what it will be at the end of the day.

Please tell us about your involvement with ISES (International Special Events Society)

I joined two years ago when I realized that Lynn Fletcher and others I knew were part of this organization. I found out quickly that it had a lot going for it and the people participating in it were people with similar interests and goals.  I jumped on board as a sponsor and produce films for ISES Calgary.

What is your favorite thing to portray through video?

The emotion, beauty, that goes into a special event or wedding. Each is unique and capturing the moment through video is what I do best.

What are your goals and dreams for your future in videography and film-making?

I’m always trying to produce something meaningful and of interest to others. I have a travel/food show in the works that I’m hoping will be picked up by a network to start production. I’d love to create documentaries that have lasting impact and importance, but then again I guess I already create documentaries for people everyday!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

If anyone is not getting a video film of their wedding, they should pose themselves this question: If you had the choice of showing your grand kids a photo of your wedding day or a video, which would you choose? Both is what I say, but remember the vows you made and emotions shown through voice and movement can only be captured on video.

A use of many panels of chiffon drapery, beaded curtains and dramatic lighting helps to transform this breathtaking space! Lynn Fletcher Weddings had the absolute honor of winning the award for Best Overall Booth Design! Kait Kucy (author of the blog www.yuppielove.org) was a special judge for all the booth awards.  

In addition, the Bridal Expo had a separate display area, where Wedding Planners were able to display one table design, complete with their own personal touches of color, chairs, centerpieces and place setting décor design. Guests then voted on which table design they liked the most, and in the end all votes were tallied and the winner was… Lynn Fletcher Weddings!

Wedding days are fantastic and special, and while they seem to be perfect, they sometimes have hiccups along the way! You can make an “Emergency Bag” containing a variety of little tricks and fixes used by the pros, to ensure your magical day is not interrupted! Keep a bag or pouch in your hotel room or reception room for easy access…just in case! LFW brings a large toolkit filled with everything you could imagine and more. This monster list is what Lynn and her team come armed with onsite. The kit is replenished after every wedding to ensure they are always prepared!  Here are a few of our must-haves:

1 –Baby Wipes – for cleaning dirty Ring bearer faces, to removing liquid eyeliner smears, without destroying your make up.

2 – White Chalk / Tide stick / Shout Wipes – useful to cover up any unfortunate smudges on your dress

3 – Clear Nail Polish – stops any run in stockings

4 – Change of Shoes – Nothing ruins a dance-a-thon evening more than blisters from your new wedding shoes! Try a comfortable pair of shoes with the same height factor that have already been broken in. Platform flip flops are a great idea and can be embellished with ribbon to match the wedding.

5 – Extra earring backs

6 – Mini Sewing Kit – Make sure to have threads of the colours you and your bridesmaids will be wearing! Black is also important for the Guys’ suits.

7 – Safety Pins – in all sizes. Extra large ones are essential in case your bustle comes undone or the snaps break.

8 – Medicine – Include things such as Advil (for tension headaches that are common when you are nervous), Imodium (just in case…if this the unthinkable happens, you’ll be glad you packed it!)

9 – Make-up – you will probable have fantastic make-up professionally done, but just some of the basics for freshening up

10 – Small Scissors

11 – Deodorant – for obvious reasons. Use a spray type so many gals can share.

12 – Toothbrush and Toothpaste

13 – A back-up pair of panty hose – For you or your bridesmaid!

14 – Emery Board – nothing is more annoying than a rough nail that keeps catching on things

15 – Tampons or Sanitary Napkins – Again…just in case! If needed you’ll be glad you have them!

16 – Tissues – I’m sure you or someone will be crying at some point! We have fancy little packets just for the Moms and put one on each of their chairs.

17 – Hairspray – the little travel size ones are handy to have!

18 – Nail Polish – in the colour you are wearing!

20 – Mole Skin – the best for blisters.

Reception Bathroom Baskets

Many of the items included in the “Emergency Kit” can be also used for the Washroom Baskets, at the Reception. We also like to add little cards with local cab numbers in all the washroom baskets, as well as at the bar to help ensure everyone gets a safe ride home after celebrating!

Here is a basket for all of our guests,

To make sure everyone feels their best!

The hairspray will help hold your hair in place,

The bobby pins to keep your hair out of your face.

If you break a nail, don’t worry! There’s a file and some glue,

It can also fix a broken heel on a shoe!

The polish will stop that darn run in your hose,

STEP 1

Make a knot, as if you were about to tie your shoe laces. Instead of doing the “loops” fold back the bottom end and hold it in place, to be fastened.

STEP 2

Take the top end upwards, over the front of the “bow” to resemble the shape you’re trying to achieve.

STEP 3

Now take that end upwards, under and up, pushing it back through the knot. This gives it the “doubled-up” effect that looks so spectacular!

STEP 4

Pull the tie snug, but not too tight or you may damage the tie. (If you are renting it, this is not desirable). Plump up and fluff up the fabric until the bow tie looks even and symmetrical!

Start by deciding whether you want to wear a dramatic spiked pair of heels, or reasonable and sweet wedding flats. Other than the visual look of the shoes, there are important factors to consider, such as wedding venue, height of the groom, temperature outside, the length of the ceremony and how far you have to walk down the aisle. If you are on the beach or walking through tall grass, you may want flats, while if you indoors, with a shorter style dress, you may want an amazing pair of heels that will make your overall wedding ensemble one no guest will ever forget! Some brides have a Winter Wonderland Wedding, amidst a snowy background and partake in a fun and festive “snow-boot” that makes for a super memorable look and wedding photo memories for all. No matter what you choose as a bride, remember to coordinate your special look with your bridesmaids as well. Perhaps by using a different complimenting colour scheme in a similar style, or a different look to reflect each bridesmaid individually.

A few tips for the comfort savvy Brides as well as the flashy style focused ones. Although some platform stilettos look stunning in photos, your feet may not think so! Save those stunners for the main photos, have a second pair (or boots perhaps) for outside photos, and then have comfy ones saved to rip up the dancefloor later. Whichever pair (s) you choose, make sure that they are all approximately the same height. You do not want to trip all over your dress while dancing in flats if the skirt has been hemmed to fall perfectly for your 7 inch platforms. You can also arrange to have the bustle on the dress come up higher for later in the day. This way you can wear whatever height of heel you want after the photographer stops shooting.
